Our preschool literacy program builds a strong foundation for future reading success. In both Pre-K3 and Pre-K4, students learn one letter of the alphabet each week through engaging stories, songs, art projects, games, and hands-on activities that reinforce letter recognition and letter sounds.
In Pre-K3, students focus primarily on recognizing uppercase letters while being introduced to lowercase letters and their corresponding sounds. In Pre-K4, students master both uppercase and lowercase letters while expanding their phonemic awareness through the Heggerty curriculum.
The Heggerty Phonemic Awareness curriculum is taught in preschool through first grades. This research-based program for foundational literacy incorporates the strong phonemic awareness that is crucial to reading success, and its lessons are quick, fun, and multisensory. Heggerty also integrates some basic fundamentals of the kindergarten phonics curriculum, such as an alphabet fluency drill with a multisensory approach, to create a seamless transition to the next year.
Using the Abeka Phonics program, Pre-K4 students also begin learning letter blends, decoding simple words, and developing early reading skills. During the second half of the year, students participate in guided reading groups and begin practicing sight words as they prepare for kindergarten.
